Here’s how to get ready for your an appointment to make a travel consent letter.
Review the Government of Canada’s requirements for a travel consent letter.
Make sure to review the Government of Canada’s general information on travelling with children. Then, review their information on travel consent letters.
Also check with any travel agent you might be using, for their recommendations.
Please make sure that your travel consent letter is completed with all the necessary details, but do not sign it until you are in front of the notary!
Your travel consent letter should have both a start and an end date for the travel. We cannot sign travel consent letters which do not have “end dates”.
Who should come to this appointment?
Only the person who is giving the consent (by signing the documents) should come to the appointment.
Please do not bring the person who is travelling with the child, especially if that person is your former spouse. We want to make sure that you are not being talked into signing documentation you don’t really want to sign.
Please don’t bring the child who is travelling, or any of their paperwork – we only need the person signing the travel consent letter!
Yes, you still need your ID, even for a travel consent letter!
We have to identify our clients. When getting ready for your appointment to sign a travel consent letter, please remember to bring your two pieces of current, government-issued ID, one of which needs to have a photo.
How long will this take?
Your appointment should take about 15 minutes if you have proper ID, and the document is completed (but not signed!).
If your document is going to take longer than the standard 15 minute appointment, we will let you know. Additional fees may apply for longer appointments.
Be Kind
It’s always surprising to have to say this out loud, but we do not tolerate abuse of our staff, ourselves or the legal system.
We will refuse service to persons who are rude, abusive, who throw things or have tantrums. And yes, these are all real-life things that have happened.
We will also refuse you service if you appear to be asking for this service for invalid documents, or for documents which may be used in fraudulent or suspicious circumstances.
We love helping our clients within our professional obligations, and will often go out of our way to help where we can. When we can’t help, we will always let you know.
