Congratulations! Here’s how to get ready for your an appointment to have us help you with a marriage licence.

First, read the information on the BC Government’s website about getting a marriage licence.

We only need to see one of you

We only need to see one of the two of you – it doesn’t matter which one. But the one who shows up needs to bring the appropriate ID for BOTH of you!!

Bring ID for both of you.

We have to identify our clients, and we need to make sure we are getting your names right.

Please remember to bring your two pieces of current, government-issued ID, one of which needs to have a photo.

One of the two pieces of ID needs to be something that shows the city where you were born – for example, your birth certificate or a Passport.

We need to use your full legal name as you were at birth, or pursuant to any name change you might have done. Please note that a formal name change is a different thing than using a previous spouse’s name.

For example, imagine your name at birth was Mary Jane Smith, but you later married and divorced Harold John Adams. We will use Mary Jane Smith on your marriage licence, even if you took the name Adams when you married.

Imagine if your name at birth was Archibald Percival Jones. If you did a formal name change to Archie Jones, we will want to see your name change certificate.

This is to help keep the government records clean and consistent.

How long will this take?

Your appointment should take approximately 15 minutes if you have brought us proper identification documents for both you and your spouse-to-be.

If your document is going to take longer than the standard 15 minute appointment, we will let you know. Additional fees may apply for longer appointments.

Be Kind

It’s always surprising to have to say this out loud, but we do not tolerate abuse of our staff, ourselves or the legal system.

We will refuse service to persons who are rude, abusive, who throw things or have tantrums. And yes, these are all real-life things that have happened.

We will also refuse you service if you appear to be asking for this service for invalid documents, or for documents which may be used in fraudulent or suspicious circumstances.

We love helping our clients within our professional obligations, and will often go out of our way to help where we can. When we can’t help, we will always let you know.
